One of Chicago's hidden tourist attractions.. and free, to boot.. is its enormous railway facilities, by far the world's largest, handling over 35,000 carloads (or if you're European, carriageloads) of cargo per day, on top of hundreds of suburban and intercity passenger train movements. Things aren't the quite same as the days  when you could spot the 20th Century  and Broadway Limited at Englewood, but this
Trains Magazine page , The Chicago Railran Site, and the Chicago Rail Junctions site all give a list of places for trainspotters to get their jollies, including Brighton Park Junction (80 trains a day, is that enough?), although none include (because of lack of public viewing points, I suspect) my favorite, BNSF Corwith Yards, at the  time it was built, (1889) the world's largest railway frieght yard (and still plenty busy today).
